Amos Alonzo Stagg (1862-1965) was perhaps the most influential figure in the history of collegiate athletics. Having coached and contributed to the development of multiple sports, his legacy remains primarily with football and basketball. The legendary Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne once said that "all football comes from Stagg." He is enshrined in two Halls of Fame, and the NCAA Division III football championship is known as the Stagg Bowl.
Stagg's football career began at Yale University, where he was selected to the first Football All-American team as a player in 1889. The following year, he began his football coaching career at Springfield College (1890-1891), where James Naismith, later famous as the inventor of basketball, played under him.
Stagg's most significant contributions to football occurred during his forty-one-year tenure as head coach of the University of Chicago (1892-1932). Under his guidance, Chicago became known as a football powerhouse during the first quarter of the twentieth century, winning seven Big Ten championships (1899, 1905, 1907, 1908, 1913, 1922, and 1924). In addition to his football duties, he also coached track, baseball, and basketball and is credited with helping to organize the Big Ten Conference. In 1912, the year identified on this mug, the Maroons finished second in the Western Conference with a 6-1 record and outscored all their opponents.

- AN 1883 KANSAS QUILT WITH CHILD'S HAND
AN 1883 KANSAS QUILT WITH CHILD'S HAND & FAMILY HISTORYThe story of this fine folk art applique quilt revolves around the stitched outline of six-year-old Timothy Baker McNabb's little hand in the center of every block. The quilting is that of his mother, Malvina Terissa McNabb (1842-1920) of Linn County, Kansas. The quilt was made in 1883 but is lettered 'T.B. McNabb Made in 1877 - March 15 His Hand' in black on the muslin side of one block. Timothy was born in 1877 and died in 1933.The handiwork is a nicely executed version of the 'Floral Cockade' motif seen in American sampler, or album quilts of the 1840s and again around the Civil War. This version displays sixteen floating eight-sided Cockade designs in red, green and orange radiating stylized flower heads tipped in a soft pink sprigged calico. The center of each Cockade design is stitched with the likeness of Tim McNabb's hand. The blocks are framed in red, green and orange gridwork while the whole is backed in muslin and finished in a green binding. The archive of documentation that accompanies this quilt include census records, family history, obituaries and genealogy on the McNabb family of Tennessee and Kansas back to 1795.Measures 68 x 82 inches.Very good condition, noting scattered stains and toning, one area of tattering on the binding.Provenance: The Estate of the Legendary Collector J. Loyd Davis, Prairie Village, KS.

- VERY RARE CHINESE 'LEGEND OF THE WHITE
VERY RARE CHINESE 'LEGEND OF THE WHITE SNAKE' AUTOMATONPainted wood, papier maché, enamel, silk and metal in three wood and glass casements raised on a later Hongmu wood stand; fitted with moving figures and animals amongst pavilions in landscapes.
4 ft. 6 1/4 in. x 6 ft. 4 in. x 15 in.
Note: Narrative scenes of the legend are contained within the three casements. The central and largest depicting the famous battle between the immortal Bai Suzhen (the white snake) and her enemy Buddhist monk Fahai. Bai Suzhen amasses an army of underwater demons to flood the temple where Fahai has imprisioned her husband Xu Xian. The attack fails as Fahai magically commands the mountain to rise out of harm's way. The temple appears amongst the towering rocky mountains, varying trees, foliage and swirling colorful clouds. The left casement illustrates further scenes from the drama including the rescue of Bai Suzhen from the Leifeng pagoda where Fahai is holding her captive after the birth of her son. The right casement depicts other moments from the legend among them, the disapproving monk Fahai wielding a sword with other figures in landscapes with pagodas.
The tradition of automata originates with clock making which was introduced to China as early at 1601 by Spanish Jesuit missionaries. This impressive example example dates from the Qing Dynasty and represents the demand for clocks by elite members of society which included a palace workshop dedicated to the craft. A small clock in the Palace Museum, Beijing, set within a ‘landscape’ similar in palette and style to the automaton, and accompanied by two blue birds comparable to one in the present example, attributed to the 19th century.

- Carved oak wall hanging depicting St
Carved oak wall hanging depicting St Mary Magdalene holding a chalice, Early Christian tradition holds that Jesus' follower Mary Magdalene collected Christ's blood in a sacred vessel after the Crucifixion.
Originally called the Marian Chalice, meaning the Chalice of Mary Magdalene, Mary's sacred vessel was believed to have been sealed up in Jesus’ empty tomb where it remained for almost four hundred years. After the Roman emperor Constantine the Great converted to Christianity in the early fourth century, his mother the Empress Helena ordered the excavation of the Holy Sepulchre, the purported site of Christ’s tomb in Jerusalem. During the excavation a cup was found which many believed to be the Marian Chalice. It was taken to Rome where it was believed to possess miraculous healing powers. The Marian Chalice, or Chalice of Magdalene, remained in Rome until the city was sacked by the barbarians in AD 410. Along with other treasures, it was taken from the city in an armed convoy of carts and brought to the safety of Britain, the last outpost of Roman civilization in Western Europe. What then happened to the sacred relic went unrecorded, but well into the Middle Ages the legend persisted that it was still hidden somewhere in the British Isles. some splits and minor losses, probably Continental, 18th c or earlier, 24" high
